WHAT IS BRUXISM?

Bruxism is the medical term used to describe unconscious tooth grinding or clenching while awake or asleep. Grinding teeth, especially over long period of time, can have a negative impact on the enamel of the teeth, as well as the muscles of the jaw an face. It is not uncommon to see chipped teeth, flattening of the tooth surfaces in those who grind. Chronic bruxism may also contribute to recurring headaches, facial pain and even migraines.

GUMMY SMILE TREATMENT

A gummy smile is seen when a lot of gum shows above the upper teeth when we smile. This can be due to the underlying bone or over activity of the upper lip. In either case, muscle relaxant injections can be used to improve the appearance seen. In some cases, placing a little filler in the upper lip also helps to improve the appearance of the smile.

Bruxism procedures

Muscle relaxant injections may help to reduce tooth grinding and jaw clenching, and therefore may help relieve the associated pain and discomfort. There are night guards available too, which we might advise you to wear.
A small amount is injected in the masseter muscle which is found at the sides of the face. The muscle weakens, which helps control the involuntary grinding of the teeth and clenching of the jaw. Voluntary movements, such as chewing and facial expressions, are not effected by the treatment.
Results start appearing approximately 2 weeks after the injections, with the final result seen at 6-8 weeks. The results can last for up to 6-8 months.

A thorough medical consultation is performed to find out if you are suitable for any of the treatments.
